SUMMARY:Beyond the ADA: Disabled Voices in the Conversation about Inclusion in the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:The Middlesex County Office of Career Opportunity (MCOCO) has teamed up with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS) to discuss a topic that is too frequently pushed to the sidelines or only spoken of in whispers: disability in the workplace. \nAs of 2021\, disabled people make up more than 19 percent of the American labor force. This proportion is growing for a number of reasons\, from cultural shifts empowering people with disabilities in the workplace to long-term consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. There are currently 61 million individuals with disabilities in the United States\, and only about half of them are working. While some are unable to work and need different supports\, the conversation about those who are ready\, willing\, and able to work\, but are discriminated against or otherwise disenfranchised\, is too often neglected. \nTo combat this marginalization\, MCOCO and DVRS are working together to bring you a two-part series of free virtual workshops tackling this issue from multiple angles. The first workshop\, “Beyond the ADA: Disabled Voices in the Conversation about Inclusion\,” will take place Wednesday\, February 15\, at 10:00 am via Zoom\, spotlighting the true\, unfiltered experiences of people with disabilities as they have navigated education\, the job search\, the workplace\, and beyond. \nFeatured speakers include: \nJohn Killacky\, a former Representative in the Vermont House of Representatives\, who was previously director of Flynn Center in Burlington and Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco.  He is also a video artist who co-edited the Lambda-award winning anthology\, “Queer Crips: Disabled Gay Men and Their Stories.” \nRachel Smith\, Certified Employment Support Professional (CESP) and Employment Services Manager at Easterseals of New Jersey\, supporting those with Intellectual and Development Disabilities\, and bringing firsthand knowledge from the field into her trainings. \nJason Weppelman\, who has over a decade of experience in helping people with disabilities\, autism and/or neurodivergence find careers.  He has helped both small and large companies see the value in this talent and create plans to recruit and hire.  Jason\, himself\, has epilepsy and has recently had to learn to navigate the world with this disability. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:GRWDB Local Plan Public Forum
DESCRIPTION:The Greater Raritan Workforce Development Board (GRWDB) invites community members\, employers\, residents\, and public officials in Hunterdon and Somerset Counties to join a discussion about workforce services and programs for both counties. Input from attendees will help the GRWDB develop its 2023 workforce plan. The forum will be available to the public virtually and open for in-person attendance on Tuesday\, Dec. 6\, in Somerville. \nEvery four years\, New Jersey’s 17 local workforce boards are required to write a Local Plan to help workforce boards better serve their clients. Each of the 17 Plans outlines workforce services and programs available to employers and job seekers and ways to collaborate and improve the system. The plan is developed based on local data trends and evaluations of existing services\, along with input received from the public discussion. The deadline to submit the Local Plan to the state is spring 2023. \nConducting the public forum will be GRWDB staff. Attending the meeting will be members of the GRWDB full board and its five workforce committees\, and local officials and residents. Any individuals and representatives from organizations can attend this public forum. \n The public forum occurs on Monday\, Dec. 6\, from 12 to 2 p.m. in the first-floor conference room at 27 Warren St. in Somerville. A light lunch will be served at noon\, followed by a presentation and discussion from 12:30 to 2 p.m. All attendees will receive a pre-meeting packet to review data sets for a robust conversation. \nTo register for in-person attendance or to attend virtually and receive a GoToMeeting link\, send an email to info@thegrwdb.org. SUMMARY:Somerset County Diversity Festival
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate that\, October is Global Diversity Awareness month\, the Somerset County Board of County Commissioners will host the fourth annual Diversity Festival on October 16\, 2022\, from 12-4 pm on Main and Grove Streets in downtown Somerville.  The Diversity Festival is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate residents from all backgrounds\, cultures and ethnicities and have a great day in downtown Somerville all at the same time. \nThis year’s festival offers something for everyone. The space has doubled\, providing room for more food\, more games\, and more fun! We’ve added a second sound stage to accommodate more artists and will feature performances by a zydeco band\, an Indian fusion duo\, a jazz duo\, an acappella chorus\, and a Latin swing band. There will also be two dance performances. \nFor the first time ever\, the festival will feature a KidZone where games and activities for our youngest county residents will be concentrated. There will be a BounceHouse\, a DJ\, two face painters\, a henna artist and jugglers\, in addition to all the games and activities we’ve planned.  And best of all – there is no charge for any of this. \nTo make the day even more special\, the organizing committee of county employees worked with the Somerset County Business Partnership to solicit prizes from their members and will have drawings throughout the day for an Iron Peak gift bag\, tickets to the Raritan Valley Community College planetarium\, a one-month membership to the Jewish Community Center\, and class passes to Club Pilates.  And do bring your appetite as there will be delicious\, affordable offerings from food trucks\, as well as a passport menu to make you aware of meal specials along Main Street. Come for lunch and stay for dinner.
